The Girl From Ipanema (Solo Guitar)
“The Girl from Ipanema” is a famous bossa nova song inspired by a real girl, Heloísa Pinheiro, who would walk past a café in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro, every day on her way to the beach. In 1962, Brazilian musicians Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes noticed her and were inspired to write the song, which became an international hit, blending smooth jazz with Brazilian rhythms. The song’s breezy, romantic feel captured the essence of the Ipanema neighborhood and became an iconic piece of Brazilian music.
Every Breath You Take (Violin & Guitar)
“Every Breath You Take” is a song by the English rock band The Police, released in May 1983 as the lead single from their fifth album, Synchronicity. Written by Sting, the song features a minimalist arrangement with a distinctive arpeggiated guitar riff, bassline, and vocals, complemented by drums from Stewart Copeland. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and topped charts in multiple countries, becoming one of the best-selling singles of 1983. Lyrically, it explores themes of surveillance and obsession, often misinterpreted as a love song. The track won two Grammy Awards in 1984: Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. It has been widely covered and sampled, cementing its status as a classic in popular music.
Wave (Flute & Guitar)
“Wave,” composed by Brazilian musician Antônio Carlos Jobim, is a classic bossa nova piece released in 1967 as the title track of his album “Wave.” Instrumental in its original form, “Wave” showcases Jobim’s signature style, blending Brazilian rhythms with sophisticated jazz harmonies. The song became one of Jobim’s most famous compositions and has been widely covered by numerous artists, including Frank Sinatra, who added lyrics to the melody. “Wave” is celebrated for its smooth, flowing melody and lush orchestration, solidifying Jobim’s role as a pivotal figure in the bossa nova movement and a major influence on international jazz.
Classical Gas (Solo Guitar)
“Classical Gas” is an iconic instrumental piece composed by Mason Williams, who was a writer for “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in the late 1960s. Originally, Williams wrote it as a classical guitar piece, and it was intended to be a sort of satire on classical music. When it was released in 1968, it quickly became a huge hit, blending elements of folk, rock, and classical music in a way that captured the spirit of the era.
El Choclo (Violin & Guitar)
(Live at the Nathaniel Russell House in downtown Charleston)
“El Choclo,” one of the most famous tangos, was composed by Argentine musician Ángel Villoldo and first published in 1903. The title translates to “The Corn Cob,” a playful reference in keeping with the light-hearted yet passionate nature of the music. “El Choclo” quickly became a tango standard, appreciated for its catchy and rhythmic melody. Over the years, it has been performed by countless artists and orchestras, each bringing their own flair to the piece. The song’s enduring popularity has made it a symbol of the tango genre, representing the rich cultural heritage of Argentina and the vibrant, emotive style of tango music.
Braveheart Theme (Violin & Guitar)
“For the Love of a Princess,” the poignant and evocative theme from the 1995 film “Braveheart,” was composed by James Horner. Known for his ability to blend orchestral power with emotional depth, Horner created this piece to underscore the romantic and tragic elements of the story. The theme captures the love story between the protagonist, William Wallace, and his beloved Murron. Its sweeping melodies and haunting orchestration contribute significantly to the film’s emotional impact, helping it earn both critical acclaim and a lasting place in cinematic history. The piece remains one of Horner’s most celebrated works, highlighting his talent for creating music that deeply resonates with audiences.
